Deadbeat Darling

Late summer morning 2005, i woke up in Austin to the familiar smell of amphetamine smoke billowing from the garage. The half-sane chatter of children awake for days bouncing off concrete and wine-stained carpet, echoing the tired intentions we’d left scattered across a West Texas desert long ago, and i knew it was time to make my break. Never quite the saint myself, i packed a bag full of half-burnt candles and a beat up black guitar, then quietly slipped out the back door with the girl with hope in her green eyes. The next time i awoke, i was in New York City...

Coincidence has been kind to Joseph King. What started as a seed planted in his native Austin, Texas, has transformed under New York City's bright lights, and all the possibility they represent, into something truly impressive. Through a series of chance encounters in the basement clubs of the Lower East Side and the West Village, an assembly of musicians have banded together with King to form Deadbeat Darling. The quartet's forthcoming debut, June's "Weight of Wandering", brims with spindly, anxious rock powdered by the sort of romance and melodrama best delivered in a cavernous arena. And with a string of sold out shows across Manhattan and Brooklyn, and a run of big-ticket Bowery Ballroom gigs closing out 2008, King and company don't seem that far off. Equal parts mischief and bliss, eloquence and irreverence, Deadbeat Darling has created an eclectic style that shimmers with hints of dub and electronica, and has thus far inspired an equally eclectic and energetic fanbase....
