Rudely Interrupted

Bio :: Rudely Interrupted

One of Australia’s most celebrated bands, Rudely Interrupted have toured the world, played the biggest stages, starred in a critically acclaimed film documentary, and shred the stage with the likes of Feist and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

But what make the band’s achievements even more remarkable are the disabilities five of the six musicians share including blindness, deafness, autism and Down Syndrome. Rudely Interrupted is neither a novelty act nor a cover band but rather an inspiring and talented group of musicians that pump out uplifting pitch perfect indie-pop described by The Village Voice, “... as the real deal a Melbourne group with a taut impassioned sound somewhere between the Killers and Wire.”

Tragedy of the Commons is the stunning debut album from the Melbourne six piece and entertainment explosion Rudely Interrupted. Mixed by Paul McKercher (Spiderbait, Augie March, You Am I) at 301 in Sydney, the band’s ready to tour the USA and Canada in support of its release. Available now on iTunes.

The band’s latest video single – directed by one of Australia’s leading music directors Tov Belling – “Close My Eyes” is the feature indie clip of the week on ABC TV music program Rage. It will screen across network TV and pay TV in Australia from May, and USA and Canada throughout June to coincide with the release of the band's debut album.

In June 2010 Rudely Interrupted perform at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC as part of the world’s most prestigious disability arts festivals – 2010 International VSA Arts festival. Performances follow in New York City (Pianos), Brooklyn (Brooklyn Bowl), Northampton, MA (Iron Horse), Toronto (NXNE Music Festival), Ottawa (Zaphod Beeblebrox) and Montreal (Le Lion D'Or).

Rudely Interrupted Draw Praise From Guru Alan Cross

Legendary Toronto music guru and DJ Alan Cross (of Edge 102's influential 'Ongoing History Of New Music') had some pretty tall things to say about Australia's Rudely Interrupted. Impressed by the skill of the six-piece group, five of whom have various degrees of mental or physical disability, Cross states "This is a serious group making serious music---and are seriously impressing people all over the world."

Despite the disabilities the group shares -including blindness, deafness, autism, and down-syndrome- Rudely Interrupted continue to tour the world, rocking out as a strongly cohesive unit. The band recently released their newest album Tragedy of the Commons.

“Diligence is the mother of good luck.”

The quote above is from Benjamin Franklin and it’s great inspiration for the Melbourne band Rudely Interrupted. RI are one of Australia’s truly unique indie rock acts. 5 out of the 6 members share a range of both physical and intellectual differences but with a sound likened to Joy Division having a Gary Numan party while eating pitch perfect cookies, this band will challenge your thoughts and entertain your mind with their infectious hooks.

Rudely Interrupted whose music has been hailed by the critics as ‘some of the most energetic and genuine to emerge from the Australian rock ‘n’ roll underground’ played to a prestigious audience at the UN’s global headquarters in New York IN 2008 to mark International Day of Persons Living with a Disability on December 3, 2008.

Dec 3rd 2009 the rock documentary titled “Rudely Interrupted” premiered on Australian ABC 1 TV to raving critics review. The documentary was a fly on the wall look at the band on the road and the different struggles they face to ultimately overcome their challenges and create rock n roll history!

Since their first live performance in 2007 the Rudies have captured the hearts and minds of thousands across the globe. Touring with mainstream music festivals and playing alongside their peers RI went on to WOW audiences the world over. The invitation to perform at the United Nations allowed them to play sold out shows in NYC, Toronto, Bristol, Manchester and London leaving all who see the band perform speechless, amazed and ultimately inspired.

The future holds strong for RI. Rudely Interrupted have a very exciting year with a quick trip to Adelaide for the International Fringe Festival Friday 26th Feb @ Fowlers Live” then return to Melbourne for a huge Fundraiser Special Performance in April TBA shortly. Followed by the release of the first single off the new album “Tragedy of the Commons” “If You Wannit” in May in support of Scope “See the Person” campaign a week prior to leaving for their return to the states and Canada.

June U.S.A “Tragedy of the Commons Tour” will take in the USA and Canada in June 2010 including the very prestigious VSA International Arts Festival at the Kennedy Centre Washington DC, NXNE Music Festival Toronto and performances in Montreal, NYC and more TBA Stay tuned for some really amazing shows TBA!!

Inspiring is a word that gets tossed around all too often in music journalism. But in the case of Rudely Interrupted, it’s the most fitting adjective possible. Arguably Australia’s most unique group of musicians, five out of six band members share a range of physical and intellectual disabilities – blindness, deafness, aspergers, Autism and Down Syndrome. But you’d have no way of knowing listening to pop gems like “Don’t Break My Heart,” because, as Time Out suggested, “their music is some of the most energetic and genuine to emerge from the Australian rock ‘n’ roll underground in recent times.”

"Their songs lift the band above the realm of novelty and give them a cultural cache in the image-obsessed world of indie rock."– Time Out

"Every artist has a selling point, from Pete Doherty (smackhead) to 50 Cent (bullet-proof) and even Train (blandness). What separates them from the William Hung’s of this world is that their shtick does not outweigh their abilities as artists. Melbourne’s Rudely Interrupted, a band whose members suffer from a range of intellectual disabilities, play a brand of Killers-esque pop so catchy that you quickly leave your preconceptions at the door. You may also start to question your own potential in life." – Lost At E Minor

Rudely Interrupted will make history this December, becoming the first band to perform at the United Nations in New York. Indeed, on the 2nd and 3rd, the band will take part in International Day for Persons with Disabilities with a pair of shows at the UN Auditorium in NYC.
